Chapter 15

After leaving the courthouse, King had an hour to meet Gooch at a local gun range. Gooch was Richie’s uncle. He was known for his wild-west style of handling situations back in the day. He was best known for the quiet ways he handled things. Grim Reaper was what most people called him. He was a hit man who never missed a target. King sought him out years before to help him with the situation with his mother. Gooch told him that he was too young to offer his help. Now a man, Gooch knew he was ready.

King pulled into the parking lot. It was still early, but cars packed the lot. He turned off his phone so that all calls would go to voicemail. He didn’t want anyone to know what he was up to, especially Maya. If she knew that he planned on murdering his mother’s killer when he found out who he was, she would leave him or try to talk him out of it. That was a side of him that only a few knew. He waited so long for Richie to plug him with his uncle Gooch. Richie didn’t totally agree with King’s motives and he made it known.

He requested and received the police report from the police station. After reading the report, he was no closer to figuring out who killed his mother than he was before reading it. It only angered him more reading the gory details. The medical examiner’s report showed a diagram of her wounds. There were so many marks on the paper that it sickened him. There were defensive wounds which meant she fought her attacker. There was evidence that she was also beaten. He was never privy to the details of his mother’s death. It was best that he didn’t know. Hearing her cries for help was enough for him.

One thing stuck out in the report. A witness stated that he saw a young man running from the area. A very vague description was given. A black male, late teens or early twenties. That described most of the guys from the neighborhood.

Gooch came from out of nowhere to King’s car and leaned on the side of the car. He got out of the car.

“What’s up Gooch? I didn’t see you out here,” King said.

“What’s good, my man? You weren’t supposed to. Lesson number one,” Gooch said in his deep rough voice. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes and lit one. “If I would’ve lit this before making my presence known then you would have smelled the smoke and looked around.”

“Okay, I see that.”

“I remember hearing about what happened to your mother. I can understand why you want to kill the person who did it. Richie said that you didn’t know who was responsible for it. Is that right?”

“Yes, I don’t know. All I remember was a man walking real slow down the stairs. But, I didn’t see his face. I know that the person knows who I am.
